Unless you’ve been residing under a rock recently, you might have caught wind of the new Facebook scandal. It involves Abhay Deol speaking up against racist beauty commercials and calling out several A-list celebrities in the process. This isn’t a problem that has occurred recently. Abhay Deol is pointing out racism that is so ingrained in our media and cultural at this point, that it can be traced back to grade school text books.
The actor started his Facebook rant with a sardonic post that said, “WE ARE NOT A RACIST COUNTRY!” Take a look at his first post below, about an advert featuring John Abraham.
In a series of Facebook posts, he proceeded to call out the blatant racism in advertisements by companies such as Fair & Lovely, Garnier, and more. One of his even posts featured a Sonam Kapoor advertisement, to which the actor herself responded on Twitter. This led to a brief feud on Twitter (Esha Deol was called out) but it ended with Sonam conceding and admitting her prior ignorance.
You can read the full exchange here. After a bevy of status updates on this issue, Abhay Deol shared an article highlighting the celebrities that refused fairness cream ads, with the caption “Not everyone in the industry is irresponsible.” This, including all his previous posts garnered his massive positive response from fans online. It is refreshing to see someone from our socio-culturally passive film industry take an unabashed stance on a relevant issue and call his peers out.
Actors like Kangana Ranaut have also spoken about this ingrained racism, saying,
Ever since I was a kid, I have never understood the concept of fairness. Especially, in such a case, as a celebrity, what kind of an example would I be setting for younger people? I have no regrets about turning this offer down. As a public figure, I have responsibilities.”
We hope other actors and celebrities take cues from Abhay Deol and call out on bullshit more often. Keep tabs on Fondlist for more content like this!
